Akufo-Addo Urges Government and ECOWAS to Rally behind Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for TOP World Bank Job

The New Patriotic Party and its Presidential Candidate have been closely monitoring the election for the next president of the World Bank.

We are pleased to note that the candidate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has received widespread support across the continent of Africa and beyond.

The world is facing one of its most complex financial and economic challenges which have brought instability in many hitherto stable economies.  The ongoing international financial and economic crisis has further exacerbated the already precarious financial and economic conditions in many African countries. This has repercussions for the long term development agenda of our continent. Read more…

AKUFO-ADDO CONDEMNS COUP IN MALI AND CALLS FOR FIRM ECOWAS ACTION

As the Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party of Ghana, I am deeply concerned by news of the purported overthrow of the Government of the Republic of Mali, led by the elected President, H.E. Amadou Toumani, on March 22, 2012, by a group of junior officers led by Captain Amadou Aya Sanago.

To allow this coup, taking place just over one month before a presidential election, to succeed in a democratic state like Mali would be a major setback for Mali, in particular, and Africa, generally.

While we welcome the international condemnation that the junta has received from, among others, President Goodluck Jonathan of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Ghana, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the African Union, the NPP believes more must be done by the international community to ensure that this retrogressive illegality does not succeed. NDC GOVERNMENT COLLECTS HANDLING CHARGES FOR GAMBIAN VICTIMS’

The NPP is dissatisfied with the conduct of government over the payment of compensation to victims/bereaved families of the 27 Ghanaians who were murdered in the Gambia.

The Government of Ghana, in 2008 through the ECOWAS mediation platform, had gotten the Gambian Government to agree to contribute towards compensation of the 27 murdered Ghanaians.

The Gambian Government subsequently contributed $500,000. The account of the disbursements of the amount as presented to Parliament by the Minister for Foreign Affairs on Thursday, 10 November, 2011 shows betrayal and callousness on the part of government. Read more…

The Fulani menace in Ghana: the Position of the Kwahu Development Association.

The activities of the rampaging Fulani herdsmen have been a bother to people in many parts of central Ghana stretching from Akyem through Kwahu, Asante Akyem, Asante to the Northern regions.  As is the common negative behavior in all the affected areas, the herdsmen and their cattle in Kwahu engage in the following nefarious activities – bush burning which includes both cultivated and uncultivated lands, crop destruction by cattle, abuse or destruction of streams and wells as well as breaking of pipelines in the bush to create pools for watering their animals, killing of farmers, raping of women and above all creating fear and panic among inhabitants of the land.

There have been countless appeals to governments after governments for a solution to this problem yet the problem persists and continues to grow worse.  Read more…
